The SDR Option (Work-In-Progress)

Picture
Software Defined Radio (SDR) turns an ordinary laptop into a powerful communications hub—capable of receiving, decoding, and transmitting signals across the world with minimal hardware. Using tools like *JS8Call*, it enables reliable, low-power digital messaging that works even when traditional infrastructure (internet, cellular) is unavailable. Whether you're in a park, a vehicle, or at your desk, SDR offers a flexible, portable way to stay connected.

The purpose of the SDR option is to provide a resilient, decentralized communication method that anyone can learn and deploy. It’s especially valuable in emergency preparedness, off-grid operations, and community networks, where traditional systems may fail. With a simple setup—laptop, SDR device, and antenna—you can send messages across vast distances using weak signals that punch far above their weight.

The best part is you can try the SDR option for free—without any radio equipment at all. Using online receivers and web-based tools, you can listen, decode, and even begin to understand how digital radio communications work directly from your browser. It’s an easy, no-risk way to explore the system before investing in hardware. Learn How to Get the Weather Report

If you or your group is ready to go the next step beyond the Baofeng Option you are invited to adopt the SDR Option we are currently developing.

The idea is to reliably communicate a long distance message (The Weather Report) to local setups (rigs) that are inexpensive and relatively easy to establish. This main network will stretch around the world.

The system is based on software-defined-radio (SDR). It means you can transmit and receive digital messages over the radio waves in a consistent and reliable manner. Its not about getting in touch with someone, just anyone, somewhere - we need to be sure we are connecting with our like-minded network, wherever we may be.

with a digital radio platform (JS8 Call). It is relatively easy to get up and running if you are already comfortable around computers and software. There is no cost to get started. Just simply follow the instruction on this webpage and then let us know how you've made-out.

3 Step Process
We are developing a 3 step adoption protocol so you can get your group up and running on the main network as quickly as possible.

Step 1 - Logon / No Radio
Step One of the Setup is learning to use the software. Instead of using a radio to get the signal we pick up the message through the Internet. Of course it will not work if the Internet is down. This is just a start point so you becomoe familiar with the sottware and the related protocols.

You do not need a license at this stage as you will be only listening. If you have a license there is more you can do - and we activley encourage everyone to get their license (contact us if you want to know more [email protected])

use your computer and the Internet instead of a radio. With Phase Two you can receive the Weather Report directly with a simple and inexpensive rig. In Phase Three you can also transmit messages on the Weather Report network with some upgrades to your rig (and a license).

Have a look over the video on this webpage to see if you are ready for Phase One:
