Uhuru is an emergency comms network comprised of like-minded people and groups, across Canada and beyond. The name is Swahili for ‘Freedom’.
We are working together to make sure that we can stay in touch with each other in the event of a grid-down emergency.
Our network consists of all kinds of people, with all kinds of skills, talents and experience from long-time licensed amateur radio operators (hams) to people who are completely new to this sort of thing.
We embrace all forms of radio communication including amateur radio, cb radio, LoRa/Meshatastic devices, walkie-talkies, satellite and more. Our primary solution for local communication is based around the Baofeng UV-5R handheld ham radio programmed to behave like a simple, souped-up walkie-talkie.
We have also developed a simple and affordable way to conduct long distance comms across the country and around the world.
Our goal is to help groups of like-minded people:
We regularly organize bulk purchases of the Baofeng UV-5R, including the programming, so that your group has a standardized device. We will also help train your people to use the device effectively.
If you are interested in this sort of thing (and you should be) let us know and we will invite you to one of our weekly zoom sessions where you can learn more and get started.
We are also prepared to come out and make a presentation to your group.
We meet regularly on Tuesdays on Zoom at 7:00 pm EST (00:00 Zulu/UTC).
