Configs
Intent: To outline the scope for various standardized radio configurations to address 3 basic comms requirements – local (2-15 kms), regional (15-50 kms) and long distance (50+ kms). Ideally these configurations will be based on stand-alone units not requiring infrastructure (ie Internet, satellites, repeaters (?), etc.). Ideally the proposed configurations will be standardized, limit the need for having an amateur license, be highly cost-effective and relatively easy to acquire (ie kits) and learn.
Local (2-15 kms):
The primary configuration for local comms is based on the Baofeng UV-5R using GMRS/FRS (walkie-talkie) frequencies..
Additional details to come. See Baofeng Option.
Regional (15-50 kms):
Some of the possibilities include the use of repeaters, enhanced antenna configurations, relays, etc.
Additional info to come.
Long Distance (50+ kms):
At this point we are looking at establishing an HF Digital-based SDR configuration consisting of the following components:
The ideal would be to make the kits available pre-configured which would include:
The intent would be to establish the configuration for specific bands and frequencies that would be used in our network (20m and 40m).
Here is some detail on the Long Distance SDR Option:

- Extended Antenna
- Nagoya 771
- Counterpoise Antenna (Tiger Tail)
- Height Is Might
- Antenna Kits / Ingersoll Antenna

Long Distance (50+ kms):
At this point we are looking at establishing an HF Digital-based SDR configuration consisting of the following components:
- JS8 Call open-source software platform
- computer to manage the program
- virtual cable to learn to use the software before acquiring a radio
- SDR dongle with suitable antenna configuration for receive only(optional)
- truSDX radio with suitable antenna for transmit and receive
- antenna analyzer (for setup purposes)
- power source / solar power source
- faraday cage
- package (lunch box, etc.)
The ideal would be to make the kits available pre-configured which would include:
- having the radio firmware pre-installed
- the antenna pre-setup
The intent would be to establish the configuration for specific bands and frequencies that would be used in our network (20m and 40m).
